Dental Crowns

dental crowns - plano tx - willow bend dentalWhy would I need a crown?

If you’re in need of a dental crown, chances are you have a broken tooth or a tooth that has been badly damaged. A crown or cap serves as a protective barrier, covering the entire tooth to reestablish its structure.

You may be wondering why you’re being advised to get a dental crown instead of an onlay or porcelain veneer. At Willow Bend Dental, the preference is always the more conservative choice. When a tooth or several teeth are substantially damaged, the most conservative choice is usually a crown or bridge. Sometimes the condition of the tooth or teeth is so fragile, that it could not support a veneer or onlay and be strong enough to be functional.

Additional scenarios that sometimes necessitate dental crowns:

  • Decayed teeth
  • Fractured or large fillings
  • Tooth has a root canal

What to expect

The procedure will start with your Willow Bend Dental dentist re-shaping the tooth or teeth to make space for the crown or bridge. An impression will be made of all affected teeth and the adjoining teeth to ensure proper alignment and bite. A temporary crown will then be placed while you wait for the permanent version. Once it’s ready, your crown will be cemented to your tooth! Dental crowns generally last up to 40 years, so it likely won’t cross your mind again!

Dr. Beougher and the dentists at Willow Bend Dental have placed thousands of crowns, you’re in good hands.
